Our Heritage

Before the railroad arrived, this area served as a stagecoach way-station. The Piney Woods tavern offered beds and meals for travelers on the road between Augusta and Columbia. President George Washington himself dined here in 1791.

James Monroe Wise founded the town in 1870, building the first store and residence. The town was chartered in 1877, and the post office changed from “Pine House” to “Trenton” the following year.
